We offer educational  and social enrichment programs during the week, on Saturdays, and during the summer for children, youth, and adults. We also provide case management and emergency stabilization services for adults. We seek to address the systemic challenges that confront people of color and those who live in poverty. Ethel Mae Matthews and Emmaus House also fought to improve local black children’s education, pioneering a community struggle to integrate the city’s schools. Following the Brown decision in May 1954, Atlanta’s white-controlled school board dedicated itself to minimizing the ruling’s impact on the racial makeup of the city’s public schools. In October 1969, the Supreme Court’s decision in Alexander v. Holmes forced the Board of Education to adapt its policy once more.

Busch’s economic views seem to have become more pronounced after he struck up a friendship with the billionaire libertarian Charles Koch, a fellow investor in a Palm Desert golf course. In his view, entrepreneurs helped others as they enriched themselves by providing jobs that lifted families out of poverty and gave individuals dignity.

Contrary to dominant declensional narratives of the 1960s and 1970s black freedom struggle, Matthews and her fellow activists at Emmaus House vigorously continued to fight race and gender inequality in the city and state in the decades that followed. When Matthews passed away in 2005 at the age of 72, one writer remembered her as “a loud and persistent voice for the poor, the elderly and children. Busch was doing well financially with a successful estate-planning practice serving high net worth individuals, as well as an ownership stake in the family supermarkets. But rather than handing a check to the diocese to upgrade the existing schools, he and other people of means built a new Catholic school independent of church control. Youth on the Move, an out-of-school time program, prepares middle and high school students for success as adults through enrichment, education, empowering experiences, and peer support. But others said American Catholics will notice the rightward tilt of their church if they haven’t already.

Emmaus House seeks transformation in the lives of individuals, within communities, and in the systems that shape our lives. To achieve this change, we believe that as an organization we must focus on both relationship and results. Emmaus House works to improve the economic and social well-being of the residents of Peoplestown and surrounding neighborhoods.

The history walk began with a prelude to Emmaus House, the 1966 Summerhill Riot. The four-day incident resulted in the death of one African American and revealed the frustration among lower-income black communities in the face of systematic oppression. From there, the history walk moves right into the beginning of Emmaus House, with the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta buying the building and the Rev. Austin Ford moving into it in 1967. The other main events highlighted in the showcase include the opening of the Poverty Rights Office in 1970, the launching of the Summers Away Program in 1980, and the partnering with the Children’s Defense Fund to become a CDF Freedom Schools® program.
